Avery was born and raised in Marin County, California. She grew up doing theater and decided to major in theater at Drew University. After realizing she did not enjoy theater history and taking general chemistry, she found more of an interest in chemistry rather than theater and switched her major to chemistry. During her undergraduate studies she worked as a pharmacy technician finding an interest in the chemistry of pharmaceuticals. She participated in research under the guidance of Dr. Vincent Gullo doing synthetic modification of a novel antibiotic, Kibdelomycin, to improve its antibacterial activity. Her time in the lab sparked a passion for research and wanted to continue her studies and get a PhD at University of Rhode Island.

In her free time she enjoys baking and is currently learning Dutch on Duolingo.
